The Seasonal Way – Summer Series
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), summer is governed by the Fire element — a season of light, expansion, movement, and connection. It’s the season of the Heart, the organ most closely tied to our emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
But the Heart in TCM is more than a pump — it’s the home of the Shen, or spirit. It governs the quality of our sleep, clarity, peace, and joy. When our Heart energy is balanced, we feel vibrant yet calm, connected yet grounded. When it’s disturbed, we may experience restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, scattered thinking, or even emotional numbness.
🧠 Emotions as Internal Weather
According to the ancient Huangdi Nei Jing, there are seven core emotions that affect specific organs and can either harmonise or disrupt the body’s energy (Qi). These are:
| Emotion | Organ Affected | Effect on Qi |
| Joy / Elation | Heart ❤️ | Scatters or slows Qi — excess can cause overexcitement or insomnia |
| Anger | Liver 🌿 | Causes Qi to rise — may result in tension or headaches |
| Sadness | Lungs 🌬️ | Weakens or dissolves Qi — often seen in fatigue, sighing |
| Grief | Lungs & Heart 💔 | Contracts Qi — can feel like a heavy chest or low mood |
| Worry / Overthinking | Spleen & Stomach 🌾 | Knots Qi — linked to digestive upset and mental rumination |
| Fear | Kidneys 🌊 | Descends Qi — associated with adrenal fatigue, instability |
| Fright / Shock | Heart & Kidneys ⚡ | Scatters Qi — sudden events can deeply disturb the Shen |
These emotional states aren’t bad — in fact, they’re part of being human. But when they’re excessive, suppressed, or unresolved, they start to affect the body’s energy pathways and lead to imbalance or illness.
🔥 The Heart of Summer
Because summer is the season of the Heart, it’s the perfect time to work on spiritual health and emotional resilience. It’s also a time when many of us naturally open up — we socialise more, connect more, and express ourselves more freely.
Here are a few ways I nourish my own Heart in the Fire season:
- Reflect on my values — this anchors me emotionally
- Practice meditation or journaling — five minutes is enough
- Move from joy, not urgency — my exercise is about aliveness, not punishment
- Laugh daily — it’s the most natural heart medicine
- Strengthen relationships — through warmth, honesty, and time together
🧘♀️ A Simple Practice to Try
Sit or lie quietly. Place one hand on your heart.
Ask yourself: What am I feeling today, truly?
No need to change it — just witness it.
Let your breath lengthen, your heart soften, and your spirit settle.
🌞Summer is the Season of Joy
When you live in rhythm with the Fire element, you give your heart space to breathe, expand, and release what no longer serves. The goal isn’t to be “happy” all the time — it’s to feel fully and return to centre.
The Heart doesn’t just want calm — it wants connection, purpose, and joy.
So this summer, tend to your inner fire gently.
