Three-Stage Sugar Reset (21 Days)
Week 1 – Cut Down & Clear Out
- Eliminate the obvious: No added sugar in tea/coffee, no sweets, chocolate, cakes, ice cream, biscuits.
- Read the labels: Get into the habit of scanning ingredient lists for hidden sugars (look out for syrups, glucose, fructose, dextrose, etc.). Here is a very interesting article about finding hidden sugars
- Remove temptation: Clear your cupboards of sugary snacks – out of sight, out of mind and never buy again!
- Hydration reset: Drink plenty of water and herbal teas to help flush cravings and balance digestion. My personal favourite is Ginger Tea, fresh ginger washed and sliced into a flask of hot water ready to sip all day long, can really help with food cravings because it’s spicy and has a great flavour. You can also add lemon if you want,
👉 Focus: Awareness + avoidance of “big sugar” foods.
Week 2 – Rebuild with Seasonal Nourishment
- Lean into natural sweetness: Enjoy seasonal foods that are naturally sweet but balanced – roasted pumpkin, butternut squash, carrots, plums, peaches. These help satisfy the palate without spiking blood sugar.
- Balance blood sugar: Pair every meal with protein + healthy fat + fibre (e.g. lentils with vegetables, nuts with fruit, olive oil with roasted veg). This prevents the brain from “panicking” for quick sugar. look at this for interesting food flavours
- Cook more at home: Focus on whole, unprocessed ingredients so you control what goes in.
- Stabilise energy: Eat at regular times to avoid dips that trigger sugar cravings.
👉 Focus: Replace & rebalance with nourishing alternatives.
Week 3 – Integration & Long-Term Balance
- Practice mindful eating: Notice the natural sweetness in foods instead of looking for a sugar rush. Chew slowly, taste fully.
- Test your cravings: When you crave sugar, pause. Ask: “Am I tired, stressed, or dehydrated?” Often the body asks for sugar when it needs rest or water.
- Allow natural treats: A ripe peach or baked apple feels indulgent when your taste buds reset.
- Create your rhythm: Mix the discipline of Week 1 with the nurturing of Week 2 until it feels like your new baseline.
👉 Focus: Sustain the shift – not a “sugar-free diet,” but a sugar-wise lifestyle.
✨ Extra supportive practices:
- Prioritise good sleep – fatigue is a huge sugar trigger.
- Add gentle movement (walking, yoga, stretching) to support digestion and insulin sensitivity.
- Keep a sugar journal – note cravings, triggers, and how your energy feels without sugar.
