In seasonal yoga, As we move from the deep yin energy of winter into the emerging yang energy of spring, the transition from winter to spring, many of us feel the challenges of this transition. for Yoga teachers it’s an interesting time and for those who have embraced the seasonal flow—resting, reflecting, and conserving energy during winter—this change can feel natural and invigorating. However, for those who have pushed through the winter without adjusting their rhythms, this period may feel exhausting rather than energising.
At Seasonal Yoga, co-founded by myself, Julie Hanson, and Sue Woodd in the mid-90s, we have always encouraged living in harmony with the seasons. Whether through Seasonal Yoga practice, understanding circadian rhythms, or simply being more aware of the natural world, aligning with the seasons can support your energy, mood, and long-term well-being.
So, how can you navigate this transition and step into spring with vitality? If you’re feeling drained and sluggish as the light returns, don’t worry—it’s not too late to recalibrate. Here are eight ways to gently ease your body and mind into the season ahead.
1. Reflect and Plan
Winter is the season of stillness and reflection. Take time to process what has worked for you over the past few months and what hasn’t. What do you want more of? What do you want less of? Use this period for deep thinking but hold off on making major changes until the Spring Equinox on March 21st when the energy truly shifts.
2. Shift Your Movement Practices
As daylight increases and temperatures rise, gradually move your exercise routines outdoors. Walk in nature, practice yoga in the fresh air, or simply stretch with the morning light. The emerging greenery brings increased oxygen and energy, naturally supporting your vitality and mental clarity.
3. Reawaken Your Senses with Breathwork
In the transition from winter to spring, Breathing exercises help to awaken and balance energy in the body. Try deep, intentional breaths, alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana), or simple breath awareness to clear winter stagnation and prepare for the more active months ahead.
4. Adjust Your Sleep Patterns
During winter, later sunrises and early sunsets naturally encourage longer rest. As daylight extends, begin to wake earlier with the light and allow your sleep patterns to align more with nature. A well-rested body transitions more smoothly into increased activity.
5. Lighten Your Diet
Winter calls for heavier, warming foods, but as spring arrives, your digestion benefits from lighter meals. Introduce more fresh, seasonal greens, sprouts, and energizing whole foods. Reduce processed foods and excessive stimulants, which can add to seasonal sluggishness.
6. Hydrate and Detoxify
Support your body’s natural detox processes by increasing hydration. Warm lemon water in the morning, herbal teas, and fresh spring water help flush out stagnation and support liver function—essential for the seasonal shift.
7. Soak in the Sun and Natural Light
If you’ve been affected by seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or lower energy during the dark months, maximize your exposure to daylight. In this transition time from winter to spring, e
ven short walks outside or sitting in natural light can significantly improve mood and energy levels.
8. Embrace New Beginnings Without Overcommitting
Spring is a time of growth, but it’s essential not to rush. Let your energy rise gradually. Engage in projects and social activities at a sustainable pace. By aligning with nature’s rhythm, you’ll feel stronger and more prepared for the increased yang energy ahead.
As we prepare for the Spring Equinox, listen to your body and honor its needs. The seasonal transition can be a time of renewal and inspiration if approached with awareness. Whether through Seasonal Yoga, mindful movement, or simple lifestyle shifts, embracing the natural flow of the seasons can transform not only your energy but your overall well-being.
Here’s to a fresh, vibrant spring ahead!
